What can you buy for 5 bucks these days?

If you're a cheap cuss like me, you can buy a handful of fun!

Here's my haul from today:

I had to run errands in town today, and I hit two of my favorite places for bargains: Dollar General and Family Dollar. I usually have a policy that I won't spend over ten bucks in either place-- it's a challenge I made up to make being thrifty a bit more fun. It's a good tip for families trying to save money as well-- make saving money a game, and everyone comes out better in the end!

In Dollar General I found a weird book and a mini-figure.

This is Mr. Hands by Gary A. Braunbeck. I have no idea who Gary A. Braunbeck is, but when I saw the cover of the book I pretty much knew I was going to buy it. Turns out the book is about a toy that kills people. That seems oddly appropriate. The toy part-- not the killing part!!!

I want a toy of that guy on the cover. Looks like something itching to be made by a vinyl toy maker!

I also found a Darth Vader Unleashed figure. It was originally 3 bucks, and the blue sticker is supposed to be half-off of the price. It wound up ringing up as 75% off, so he was only 75 cents. Booyah! He doesn't really do much and only has one point of articulation (the right arm), but he looks pretty cool on my shelf, and that's OK by me. Toys don't always have to be super-articulated to be awesome!

At Family Dollar I found the real treasure of the trip: teensy tiny Terminators!!! These are basically scaled-down versions of the 1/18 scale Terminator: Salvation figures by Playmates toys.

They had all the packs there, but I only got the one with the T-600 and the T-700. For 3 bucks you get two tiny, articulated figures with pretty reasonable paint apps and attached weapons.

They are extremely well-sculpted for such small figures. The gunbelt on the T-600 even fits in the mini-gun and can be removed from the chamber! The T-700 has a piece of angle-iron sculpted into his mitt.

They each have 4 points of articulation: both shoulders and hips are swivel joints. They can't do the Macarena, but they can break dance like

champs!

The regular figures stand about 2.5 inches tall and the T-600 stands 2.75 inches tall. They are so cool looking standing on my shelf next to their big cousin.

Finally! A robot Infiltrator Buildman can look down on!

So... next time someone asks you what 5 bucks buys, tell them, "A killer toy, a Sith Lord, and two miniature metallic monstrosities!"

My collection... as it stands now...

So here are some pics of my display collection as it stands. My sister just moved out of her old home into a new one and gave me her old book shelf, so I was inspired to take some pics of my newly displayed collection. These aren't all the toys I own... just the ones I have room to show at the time being... there's NEVER enough room for toys!!! (I have a stuffed monkey collection that needs room for display... why in the world do I need SO many monkeys?????)

My Jonny Quest diorama from McFarlane Toys... After tweaking the paint a bit and gluing things in place it's my favorite McFarlane piece!

A poseable Man-Thing bust that my good friend Billy Parker made for my birthday!

My Glyos collection... these things add up fast... especially with Matt giving stuff away like crazy!!!:

What collection is complete without a little bit of Godzilla? :

I loved the Planet Hulk series... too bad World War Hulk and Skaar have disappointed me... the toys are still pretty cool! The Bride and Batman had to put in an appearance as well:

Just an Alien Queen, some comic book favorites, and a Tachikoma hang out while Roy Fokker and Riddick look on:

My Transformers... notice the Knight Rider Becames Robert figure... his colors are purely FABULOUS... or something:

Looking at this again, I guess it's as much of a DVD and book display as it is a toy collection display!

This is how the end begins...

Someone on the October Toys Forum posted a link to this Fox News story today:

Upcoming Military Robot Could Feed on Dead Bodies

It could be a combination of 19th-century mechanics, 21st-century technology — and a 20th-century horror movie.

A Maryland company under contract to the Pentagon is working on a steam-powered robot that would fuel itself by gobbling up whatever organic material it can find — grass, wood, old furniture, even dead bodies.

Robotic Technology Inc.'s Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot — that's right, "EATR" — "can find, ingest, and extract energy from biomass in the environment (and other organically-based energy sources), as well as use conventional and alternative fuels (such as gasoline, heavy fuel, kerosene, diesel, propane, coal, cooking oil, and solar) when suitable," reads the company's Web site.

That "biomass" and "other organically-based energy sources" wouldn't necessarily be limited to plant material — animal and human corpses contain plenty of energy, and they'd be plentiful in a war zone.

EATR will be powered by the Waste Heat Engine developed by Cyclone Power Technology of Pompano Beach, Fla., which uses an "external combustion chamber" burning up fuel to heat up water in a closed loop, generating electricity.

The advantages to the military are that the robot would be extremely flexible in fuel sources and could roam on its own for months, even years, without having to be refueled or serviced.

Upon the EATR platform, the Pentagon could build all sorts of things — a transport, an ambulance, a communications center, even a mobile gunship.

In press materials, Robotic Technology presents EATR as an essentially benign artificial creature that fills its belly through "foraging," despite the obvious military purpose.

Well... how does that make you feel?

I think I know what Jason Fox is thinking...

Smash!!!

Here's Joe Ledbetter's character Smash:

And here's my take on the character:

This was done for a contest over on the October Toys Forums. You should go take a look at the site and enter for yourself... it's a drawing, so great skills are not the issue... it's not an art contest... it's a contest... with art!!!

Silly cats

I've been cat and house-sitting the last two weeks (that's partially why no new artwork has been showing up) for my brother and sister-in-law to go on a trip to Alaska. It has been a fun two weeks just getting away from the work a bit. I'm anxious to get back to it now that the time runs short here.

The cats have made everything so much more fun. I love my fat kitty, Mae, back home, but she's kinda laid back like me. My sister-in-law has an insane demon kitty named Taylor. Taylor is energy made flesh. If you don't want something ganked and hidden by him, you better keep it under lock and key. I was building with some Glyos figure parts, and the little thief stole one of the pieces and tried to run off with it. I stopped him and retrieved the piece though.

The best thing was what I partially captured with my camera. I went to Target one day and picked up some Mighty Muggs figures that were on clearance. When I got back home, I threw the bag with the two figures in it on the bed and went to the bathroom. I came back to discover that Taylor had kicked the boxed figures out of the bag and... well...

Cats... you don't own them... they just let you live near them.

Porkilypine!!!

I'm catching up on a lot of videos and junk I don't normally get to see at home... and I think everyone and his brother needs to see this. It's George Gaspar's amazing beard in action. George and his wife Ayleen, for those who may not know, runs a toy company called October Toys, makers of the fantabulous Gwins and the Z.O.M.B.I.E. line of figures. For well over a year (maybe it's two now... I'm not sure... I'm sure George can clear it up) George grew a beard that rivals the mane of the great northern yeti. He posted a video on Youtube showing the insertion of 2,222 toothpicks into his epic facial hair. Check it out!

You should check out all of George and Ayleen's great videos... they are such fun, funny, and all around nice people. While You're at it, hop on over to the October Toys Forum and join us all for all kinds of toy-loving shenanigans!

Robots and Donuts

Just look at this image:

How can you top that? I've just discovered the artwork of Eric Joyner, a man who paints two things I love: Robots and donuts.

His paintings are both beautiful and whimsical and have an ability to take you back to a more innocent time when all you needed was a wind-up robot and an open expanse of carpet to set him free.

Check out his site... he offers several exquisite prints and other products featuring his artwork.

You can also check out his book, Robots and Donuts at the Dark Horse website.

The Last Guardian

This is probably old news, but it was new to me. This trailer is BEAUTIFUL. I'll never play the game, because I just know the ending will make me cry.

Shut up.

I'm sorry...

... but it just doesn't get any better than this:

Bask in the glory of this... thing...
